Sobek

Background

The Nile River.
The lifeblood of Egypt, and the source of stability to the inhabitants of the country. It was the foundation in which the civilization and kingdoms of Egypt were built on, and was a fundamental source of life and stability. Very few things can lay claim to sharing as much importance to the health and prosperity of the country than the Nile can, which is why this single body of water was what much of Egypt was built around. Agriculture and farming would be impossible without the support of this body of water, and many aspects of culture were warped around it's cycles and behavior. Many deities of the Egyptian pantheon shoulder the responsibility of keeping the Nile fertile and prosperous, lending a guiding hand to even the rising and falling of the water to maximize the impact she would have for the people of Egypt. Though, there is a single deity in Egypt that lays claim to be the creator of the Nile River. The one responsible for enabling the entire Egyptian empire through his gift to his people, and he who presides over the Nile with a watchful gaze and ferocious guardianship.
He who's sweat gave birth to the Nile River itself.
Lord of the Waters.
God of Crocodiles.
Sobek
Many claim that it was him who rose from the primeval "Dark Waters" of Nun and created the world from his eggs. And many more found the god to be a terrifying entity that required sacrifice and tribute in order to safely traverse his river and avoid the wrath of his patron animals. But above all else, Sobek was a protective deity that symbolized power and war to the people, and a vital part of Egypt's prosperity. Because without him, Egypt would be no more.

Rules

~ First and foremost, this account is not suitable for minors to interact with when it comes to NSFW. This account features graphic and/or sexual content. If you're a minor, PLEASE do not interact with the intent of smut or lewd activity. TL banter is fine and RPs of a SFW tone and atmosphere are acceptable as well. But requests for NSFW RPs or hints of it in previously SFW For will be met with me ignoring them or dropping the RP.

~ This account is multiship, and ships that aren't planned out prior must be earned, and the same goes for lewd. I'm more than happy to plot out ships for the future, but there needs to be chemistry built between the two before the ship is put in place.

~ The current maximum for ships for this account is six.

~ I'd like to ask that any concerns or drama regarding me to be handled in DMs with me. I'm fine with discussing things, so if there's an issue don't be afraid to ask me about it directly. I try to be as open as honest as I can with things like that.

Writer

Hi! My name's Arthur, though many here might know me by AJ instead. While I don't have a writer tag, the easiest way to spot one of my other accs is when I'm speaking out of character and I use "[🌴]-" as my ooc indicator. I'm currently working full time, so while I do my best to be here and get out responses I can be very forgetful or busy. If there is a RP i'm missing or not responding to, please feel free to send me a bump or ask me about it. I usually keep to myself outside of short banter or questions, so reaching out to me for questions about RPing or responses I owe are the best methods of getting my attention.

I've had Sobek for 5 years now, and I'm always happy to see new people jump into the Egyptian pantheon with new accs. If you have any questions about the pantheon or specific gods you'd like to make accs for, reach out and ask! After all this time I know a thing or two about things and can send you suggestions, FCs, and sources to help you get a feel for whatever god you'd like to make an acc for!

Also, if I'm liking a bunch of your stuff on the TL then that means I most likely want to interact with you but are too nervous to approach. So be aware of that!

Portrayal

There are many different myths and origins surrounding Sobek as a deity, due to each region of Egypt having a different cannon about each god in their respective views and documentation. I've chosen to lean into the more powerful "Creator God" side of Sobek's mythology, meaning that my portrayal of him will lean on him being an entity that rose and created both the world and the Nile River. A few stretches of the creative liberties are also taken with his domains and abilities, (Such as his status as a god of pharaoic power also stretching into physical power as well).
There are many different cases of where Sobek was in relation to the pantheons family tree, but mine will not be including those and instead going for the more independent and primordial nature of Sobek that was recorded. So being the child of Set, Neith, or any other deity outside of a debatable case for Nun will not be treated as cannon in the continuity of my portrayal. Direct links to the main sources for where I got my information and research will be included in the button below for context for my decision.

Some people may have a problem with this, but that's how I've chosen to write this version of Sobek. So while I'll take advice for what I can do to change or make him better, flat out changing it because someone doesn't agree with it is none of my concern.

Appearance

Sobek is capable of taking on many different forms, thought his primary appearance seems to be a human guise he finds to be most fitting. In this form he has a very muscular build, and a massive tattoo of a hawk decorates the entirety of his back and the left side of his chest. This was once a symbol of devotion for Ra, but even after that respect and trust was shattered many centuries ago, he still decides to keep it for an undisclosed reason.

Long hair going down to his shoulders is his chosen hair style, and he'll sometimes tie it back if he feels like doing so. A large scar also adorns his visage; a reminder of a ferocious battle he once had with an lesser known evil Egyptian deity by the name of Denwen in defense of Faiyum. This perfectly matches the usually stern or stoic expression Sobek has when conversing with others. He's not very fond of humor anymore, so the deity will rarely be seen actually smiling. Though, there have been a few cases in recent memory of him cracking a small grin.

Divine Appearance

Sobek's natural apperance is a stark contrast to his human form, and embodies everything that the reptilian deity is about. While the change to this larger form raises his height to a far greater 10'3, Sobek's true splendor brings him to a towering height that rivals even the pyramids of Egypt. His true form turns him into a vastly muscular anthropomorphic crocodile, complete with the head of his patron animal and a tail as well. Sobek's true might is one that casts a shadow of fear and awe across the sands of Egypt when he reveals his true and glorious nature.

History

There was a time where Sobek was as primal and aggressive as the myths claimed him to be. A chaotic, boisterous entity that indulged in the many pleasures and joys that life had to offer. Confident and prideful of his country and accomplishments to a fault, Sobek was very much in line with his epithets "He Who Eats While He Mates" and "Great of Terror". He was an absolute powerhouse of his pantheon, being one of the most powerful and respected of his kin.

But, all that changed once the Exodus of Moses happened.

The once confident Nile God was brought to his knees as he could only watch helplessly as Egypt began falling into ruin because of the 12 Plagues. Seeing his people suffer to such a degree, seeing his country begin crumbling from the sheer magnitude of the assault, and watching The Nile... his creation... his greatest treasure... turn to blood and become a festering pool of filth. This was an event that warped and plagued Sobek's mind entirely, and as a result began lashing out and pushing away all the other deities that he called family.

In his eyes, everyone failed their country and needed to reconcile and correct this issue. Ra was not a trusted leader in his eyes anymore, and all the gods who continued to indulge in their passions and neglect giving their absolute focus to Egypt were fools in his eyes. And so, Sobek resigned himself to isolation. All those he previously respected, and the ones that he loves, were pushed to the side so the broken Nile God could do his best to make up for his failure to protect his people from the plagues.

Centuries passed, and eventually Sobek would eventually reemerge as a changed man. Sobek became a quiet, secluded deity that was almost like a shell of what he once was. Gone was the bravado and loudness that used to be commonplace for him. Now the Nile Keeper was stoic and composed to the point of stiffness, plagued by the guilt and PTSD he suffered from the exodus. His failure gave him a hefty humbling, which he used to self reflect and change his outlook on his status and position as a god. He now saw himself as a servant of his people, as it was his job to make sure Egypt remained fertile and prosperous. Aspects of his domain, such as the more sexual sides of being a fertility god and other lesser responsibilities were thrown to the side in order to focus all his efforts on his goals. As a result of this and his isolation, Sobek comes off as a rigid and emotionless individual. And while in some aspects it has become a reality, he just has a difficult time expression emotion outside of words.

His only loyalty now lays with the people of Egypt, and his decision making is heavily dependent on his country before anything else. This has led him to being on different sides of conflict, whether they be good or evil. He holds all of his fellow deities to the same standard that he holds himself to, which is why he has lost a decent amount of respect for many in the Egyptian pantheon. And though a few have managed to earn that respect back, it is a slow process for him.

Though fractions of what he once was still remain within his current day personality. He is a very loyal deity, and his past aggression and strength will flare in the face of those who threaten his home or those he has sworn to protect. He has also been known to occasionally host festivals and celebrations in Faiyum on the Nile's shores for occasions where fun is allowed. And while he still won't actively pursue relationships or sexual desires, when he does ocassionally endulge in them he will have a pleasant time.

It will be a while, but one day he hopes to finally fulfill the almost bottomless task of repaying Egypt for his past mistakes. Maybe then, he'll finally be at peace.

Domains

Crocodiles

Sobek's patron animal, and something that he cherishes very much. Soobek's temple in Faiyum is littered with many of these creatures, and he tends to treat each one as if they were a son or daughter to him. He has also in possession of many of their abilities and strengths, all of which he utilizes in situations that require them.

The Nile River

Sobek's greatest treasure, and where the deity spends most of his time. While many other gods of Egypt have a hand in the Nile, such as the rise and fall of the tides or the source in which the water streams, it was Sobek himself who created the river. And as such, he holds complete authority over it and the final say in matters applying to it. But his command over water stems further than just the river. The Lord of Waters has total control over the many other sources of water in Egypt, from as big as marshlands to being as small as the mere water vapor in the air. Water is at his command, and only another deity that presides over it can hope to challenge his control. This also means that, while he wouldn't never do it by choice outside of harshly extreme cases, Sobek can at will drain the Nile itself and leave it as empty and dry ans the desert that surrounds it.

Fertility

Being the God of the Nile, making sure that the crops and river remains fertile and prosperous are a attached responsibility. This also goes along with the sexual side of fertility, though Sobek has at larged cast this responibility aside in favor of others. However, this isn't something that he has completley abandoned. He has been known to dabble from time to time, and is one of the only areas where he has been known to indulge in playfulness and teasing.

War

Sobek is one of the Egyptian deities who are responsible for martial prowess and military might within Egypt. He is one who is prayed to for support and guidance in times of conflict due to his far reaching knowledge of strategies and conflicts.

Power

The crocodile is described as a powerful and ferocious entity, and their patron god is the embodiment of this fact. Sobek's physical power is undisputed king within the pantheon. Many deities have stronger abilities and attributes that manage to trump Sobek, but in terms of sheer physical strength the Nile God is king. Only those on a godly power who share a similar domain to his own holds any chance of physically matching or overpowering Sobek. Pharaohs would turn to his might and pray for strength of their own, and became of symbol of pharaoic power as well.

Protection

Sobek is surprisingly adept at magics, which he uses to help defend Egypt from hostile threats. Magical shields, wards, and various other magical properties are at Sobek's disposal to aid in maintaining peace in Egypt. Many pray to him for this protection, and Sobek combines both his ferociousness and magical knowledge to aid to the best of his ability.

Sobek-Ra

There are times of conflict and strife within Egypt that demand something... more. Times of calamity and turmoil that makes a necessity for the gods to join together and combine their efforts in order to triumph and prevail.

Though for some, that is taken far more... literally.

There was a period of time within Egypt where there were threats both demonic and divine that threatened to completely destroy Egypt and it's people. Vile abominations and monstrosities rampaged and desecrated the land, and in that time a power was needed to put these horrors down. In an effort to accomplish this, Sobek and Ra fused into a single entity. One that held absolute command of not only the Nile, but as the sun itself. Creation and solar deities, fire and water. Two opposites that melded into unison for a short time in order to overcome this obstacle.

Sobek-Ra.

This wasn't something Sobek himself enjoyed doing. Fusing with Ra meant that he had to work together with the god he viewed as a failure in order to achieve something he himself couldn't overcome, far outside the boundaries of mere cooperation. The two consciousnesses fused into a single entity, and that mere fact sickened Sobek to his core. And once the calamity was wiped off the planet the Nile God swore off every joining with Ra again. But with the stirring conflicts between pantheons, it has not become a matter of if Sobek and Ra will fuse again. It's when.

And when he does come, his glory and power will send ripples and quakes through the cosmos.

Hail, the Apex of Egypt.
Hail, the Glorybringer
Hail, Sobek-Ra.
